Yes, you can add batteries to the solar you already have.
It does not matter who installed it, or whether that company is still in business. In the Florida panhandle a whole-home retrofit with 16 kWh of storage runs about $16,000 to $20,000 installed as of mid-2026. Here is how it works and what decides your price.
Two ways to do it, and one of them is usually right.
AC coupling leaves your panels and your existing inverter exactly where they are. A battery inverter goes in beside them and the existing solar feeds it. This is the least disruptive retrofit, it is the normal answer for a roof full of microinverters, and it is what most people asking this question end up with.
A DC-coupled retrofit replaces the existing inverter with a hybrid one and moves the panels onto it. It costs more on the day and leaves you with a simpler system: one box, one app, one warranty path, and slightly better round-trip efficiency because the power stops being converted twice.
The honest rule we use: if your inverter works and has years left, AC couple it and keep your money. If it is old, already failed, or you have been fighting it, put that money into replacing it and get a cleaner system out of the deal.
One thing worth checking with whoever quotes you, because it is the difference between a real backup system and an expensive one: ask whether your existing panels will still charge the battery when the grid is down. Set up properly, with equipment that is actually compatible and commissioned for it, your array keeps producing in an outage and puts what it makes into the bank, so how long you last depends on the sun and your loads rather than on one tankful of stored power. Set up without that, the battery only ever holds what was in it when the power went out.

Can you add a battery to a solar system that is already installed?

Why is the EG4 path cheaper than adding Enphase batteries?
Because you are buying storage by the kilowatt-hour, and the EG4 wall-mount banks cost far less per kWh than stacking 5 kWh Enphase units. The gap is roughly $7,000 to $13,000 on the first install at matched capacity, and it grows every time you add a battery, because more EG4 capacity is another battery on the wall while more Enphase capacity is another whole unit. The trade is that you are adding a second brand to the house instead of keeping everything one make.
Does my existing inverter need to be replaced?
Usually no. If your panels run on microinverters or a string inverter that works, an AC-coupled retrofit keeps them and adds the battery side next to them. Replacing the inverter is worth considering when it is near the end of its life, when it has already failed, or when you want the simplest possible system with one app and one warranty path. We will tell you which case you are in before you spend anything.
Will the battery back up my whole house or just some circuits?
That is a sizing decision and a panel decision, not a limitation of the retrofit. Critical loads means refrigeration, lights, internet, fans, and a well pump if you have one, and it is the affordable way in. Whole-home adds central AC, which is the biggest load in a Florida house and roughly doubles the battery you need. Plenty of people back up everything except the AC on purpose.
Can the battery charge from my existing panels during an outage?
It can, and that is the point of doing it properly, though it is not automatic. With compatible equipment commissioned for it, an AC-coupled retrofit lets your existing array keep producing while the grid is down and send that power to the battery. How much you actually get back each day is down to sun, weather, and what you are running. A battery that can only charge from the grid holds whatever was in it when the power went out and nothing more, so ask any installer directly which of the two they are quoting you.
How long does a battery retrofit take?
A straightforward retrofit is usually a short job on site, often a day or two, but the calendar is longer than the work. The permit and the utility paperwork take their own time, and a retrofit that also upgrades the main service panel adds an electrical permit on top. We will give you the real sequence for your address rather than a brochure timeline.

What if my original installer went out of business?
It comes up a lot, and it changes nothing about whether the retrofit is possible. Working on systems other people installed is normal for us. Bring us the inverter model and a photo of the main panel and we can tell you what your options are on the phone.
Can I buy the parts and do it myself?
The equipment is all on our shop at published prices and plenty of people do exactly that. Be straight with yourself about the tie-in, though: a battery retrofit lands in your main service panel, and who is allowed to make that connection is set by state and local rules rather than by who bought the parts. The common split is that you buy the gear and handle the mounting, and a licensed electrician does the connection and the permit.
