The less there is inside a device, and the easier it is to test, the better it survives a second owner. That single rule sorts the whole used market. Panels are simple and testable, so they are the strongest used buy in solar. Inverters are complicated and at least demonstrable, so they are a maybe. Batteries hide their history inside the case, so they are where you slow way down. Everything our test bench does is that rule applied with a meter, and you can run the same checks yourself.
Panels: the strong used buy, and how to test one
A panel is glass, silicon cells, a backsheet, a junction box, and two connectors. No moving parts, no firmware, no support to age out. It also cannot hide much. The physical inspection (cracked glass, browning or bubbling backsheet, loose junction box, burnt connectors) is visible from arm's length, and the electrical test takes two meter readings.
Here is the bench test on a panel we stock new, the Canadian Solar 395W. The datasheet says a healthy one makes an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 36.6V and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 13.77A. Voc is the pressure with the nozzle shut: put a meter across the leads with nothing connected and read it. Isc is the wide-open flow, read with a clamp meter or a meter rated for it.
The honest caveat, learned once and used forever: those numbers are Standard Test Conditions, 1000 watts per square meter of sun at 25 C cell temperature. A real afternoon in Gulf Breeze is rarely either one. Current scales with sunlight, so a low Isc reading in weak sun means nothing bad. Voltage barely moves with sunlight and drops as cells heat up (the datasheet lists the coefficient), so a hot roof reads a couple volts under the table. What the test catches is the big stuff: a panel reading way under its rated Voc has a dead bypass-diode section or worse. A panel within a volt or two of spec, in sun, with clean glass and a solid backsheet, is a known quantity no matter how many years it spent on somebody's roof.
Age math is on the panel's side too. The datasheet's performance warranty allows no more than 2% degradation in year one and no more than 0.55% per year after. A ten-year-old 395W panel that lived within warranty should still make at least 395 x (1 - 0.02 - 9 x 0.0055), which is about 367W. That is the arithmetic behind "used panels stretch a budget": a tested panel at 93% of nameplate, priced well under half of new, is often the best dollars-per-watt in the building.
Warranties: read what actually transfers
The same datasheet advertises a 25-year product warranty and a 25-year performance warranty, then adds conditions worth reading. Both are subject to the terms in the manufacturer's warranty statement, and the product warranty applies only to panels installed on residential rooftops in certain regions. Whether any of it transfers to a second owner is not on the datasheet at all. That lives in the warranty statement itself, so check the statement before repeating a transfer claim to anyone.
The working assumption we teach: a used purchase carries no warranty unless the paperwork in front of you says otherwise. That assumption is why used gear has to be cheap enough to make sense with zero factory backing, and it is priced into every tag on our used shelf.
New gear makes the contrast concrete. EG4's spec sheets list a 10-year standard warranty on the GridBOSS and a 5-year standard warranty on the 6000XP, and both carry a footnote that warranty registration happens through EG4's site. Registration tied to a purchase is exactly the kind of term that makes second-owner coverage shaky. Part of what a new-gear price buys is a warranty in your own name.
Inverters and electronics: the maybe
An inverter ages sitting still. Capacitors dry out, fans wear, firmware falls behind, and manufacturer support for an old model fades right along with it. And per the working assumption above, a used inverter is usually a no-warranty inverter regardless of hours.
So the bench standard for used electronics is demonstration: watch it power up, watch it run a real load, and check that the model is current enough that firmware and parts still exist. A secondhand charge controller on a shed is a low-stakes bet. The inverter at the center of a home system is the one box everything else depends on, and for that slot, current firmware, live support, and a warranty in your own name are usually worth new-gear money. We say that even though we sell used inverters, because the used ones belong in low-stakes slots.
Batteries: the careful category
A battery's condition is its history, and history is what a listing cannot show. The intake questions we ask on every battery offered to us:
How many cycles, and is there a BMS readout or screenshot to back the number? LiFePO4 batteries track this, and a seller who cannot show it is asking you to take the biggest variable on faith.
How was it stored? A summer sitting full in a hot container and a winter sitting dead in a garage are both histories that leave marks.
Was it ever fully discharged and left flat, and for how long?
What system did it come out of, and why did it come out?
None of those answers appear in a photo. A battery with a documented cycle count from a known system is a real purchase. A mystery box with terminals is a question mark you pay to open. When records are missing, the price drops or the conversation ends. That is our own buying rule on every sell-your-gear offer, and it should be your rule too.
The deal that is too good
Bad used deals repeat the same tells. A seller who will not let you test. No story for where the gear came from. "Never installed" pallets that arrive with mounting marks and roof grime. Pressure to pay today because three other buyers are supposedly coming. And the biggest one: a price that only makes sense if something is wrong. Working solar equipment holds real value; when someone prices it like scrap, they are usually telling you what it is.
One safety line that rides every used-gear conversation: testing means working around live DC, and battery terminals hold energy with everything switched off. If you are not comfortable with a meter, have someone qualified run the test, and connecting anything to your house is licensed-electrician work, every time. Before you judge any used deal, run the estimate with new gear first, so you know what the honest baseline costs.
