Racking is a chain: roof structure, attachment, rail, clamp, module. Every link is an engineered part from the racking maker's catalog, and the numbers that size the links (spans, loads, torque) come from that maker's design tables, never from memory or a rule of thumb. Get any link wrong and the wind gets a handle on the whole array, which on the Gulf Coast is the entire ballgame.
The chain, link by link
The attachment grabs the building. On a shingle roof that is a flashed or sealed foot lagged into structure; on metal it is a bracket or clamp. The rail spans between attachments and carries the modules. The clamps bond the modules to the rail. The design job is picking the right parts for the roof. The math job belongs to the vendor's tables and the engineering letter, and keeping those two jobs straight is most of what separates a clean install from a callback.
The IronRidge flush-mount system
Our pitched-roof system of record is IronRidge. The flush-mount datasheet shows three rails and the parts around them.
XR10 is the low-profile rail for regions with light snow, with 6-foot spanning capability. XR100 is the workhorse residential rail: 8-foot spanning, heavy load capability. XR1000 is the heavyweight commercial rail with 12-foot spanning. All three join with internal bonded splices.
Those spanning figures are capabilities, a ceiling under ideal assumptions. The actual allowed span for a given roof, wind speed, and exposure comes out of the IronRidge design tables (their free Design Assistant runs them), and that is a field-verify step on every job, no exceptions.
Around the rails: UFOs (Universal Fastening Objects) are the module clamps, one universal size, and they bond the module to the rail, which is how the whole array becomes one grounded assembly under the system's UL 2703 listing. Stopper sleeves snap onto a UFO to make an end clamp. CAMO is the hidden end clamp for a cleaner edge. Grounding lugs tie the array to the equipment ground. For shingle attachments the sheet shows FlashFoot2, plus conduit mounts and slotted L-feet. The system carries a Class A fire rating, PE certification letters in most states, and a 25-year warranty, all per the datasheet.
The HUG: the attachment on most of our shingle jobs
The QuickMount HUG (Halo UltraGrip) is IronRidge's shingle attachment, and the tech brief explains why it shows up on our jobs by the dozen. Its cast-aluminum halo surrounds a foam-and-mastic seal, so it waterproofs by adhering to the shingle surface instead of by tucking flashing under the course above. No prying shingles, no pilot holes, no sealant in most cases.
The install logic from the brief is worth knowing even if you never touch a roof. Aim for the rafter: hit it and two structural screws finish the job. Miss, and you try the adjacent hole. If more than three screws miss the rafter, you install all six screws and it becomes a deck mount, which is a supported, tested configuration. The brief rates the rafter-mounted HUG at 1,004 pounds of uplift and 368 pounds of lateral load, and lists passes on the UL 441 rain test and the TAS 100(A)-95 wind-driven rain test. Those are the brief's published test figures. How many HUGs your specific roof needs at what spacing is the design tables' call, field verified per job.
Roof types change the attachment, never the logic
Shingle takes the HUG or FlashFoot2. Exposed-fastener metal takes a direct-attach bracket onto the rail. Standing seam takes a seam clamp instead, with no roof penetration at all, and swapping between those two changes the entire attachment schedule even though the rails and clamps above stay identical. Tile and flat roofs have their own hardware families, and ground mounts trade the roof for foundations, which brings its own engineering. In every case the rail-and-clamp logic upstairs stays the same. Only the grab-the-building link changes.
The compatibility list is the law
A rule from our own shop: we never pair the Waaree 585W panel with the IntegraRack IR-30 in our own installs. The general lesson is bigger than the one pair. Every racking maker publishes a module compatibility list covering dimensions, frame profile, clamp zones, and tested loads, and a module-rack pairing is legitimate only if it is on that list. Never assume a big panel fits a rack because the clamps physically close on it. Check your racking maker's module compatibility list, every new module, every rack.

If you are building your own, walk it out loud: which attachment for your roof type, which rail, which clamps, and where each count came from. Any link you cannot explain is the one to look up before you order. Build a system and the racking comes matched to your roof type.
