Every solar project splits into work anyone may do and work only a state-licensed contractor may do, and the split is drawn by law, never by skill. Knowing which side of that line each task sits on, and which role each company plays, is the ground rule before any hands-on solar learning. It is also the rule our own business is built around, so we are going to state it exactly. Ape Solar is the EPC and project manager. We are not a licensed installer, and no guide on this site makes anyone one.
The cast of characters
Six roles show up on every job, and mixing them up is where most confusion, and most bad internet advice, starts.
The manufacturer builds the gear and stands behind its warranty. The distributor or retailer sells it; that is Ape Solar's shop side. The EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction manager) designs the system, supplies the equipment, and runs the project end to end; that is Ape Solar's project side. The licensed contractor performs the regulated install work and holds the license and the liability. The AHJ (authority having jurisdiction, usually your county or city building department) reviews plans, issues permits, and inspects. The utility owns the meter and the interconnection agreement, and nothing back-feeds their grid without their sign-off.
One project, six hats. A single company can wear more than one, but each hat carries its own rules.
Where Ape Solar sits, said plainly
Ape Solar designs the system, supplies the equipment, and manages the whole build: permits, engineering drawings, scheduling, inspection, utility paperwork. A state-licensed local contractor performs the install and holds the license. In the Florida panhandle that is Advanced Wire Pros, Inc., Florida electrical contractor license EC13005911, the contractor of record on our jobs. Every drawing we issue carries that line, and the general notes say it in plain words: Ape Solar is the EPC and project manager, and licensed install work is by the state-licensed contractor of record.
Why structure it that way? Because the license and the liability belong together, on the entity doing the regulated work. You still get one number to call from site visit to Permission to Operate. The contractor gets a job that arrives designed, supplied, and paperwork-ready. Nobody has to pretend to be something they are not, and when an inspector asks who the license holder is, the answer is immediate and checkable on the state's license lookup.
What a license actually is
A contractor license is a state credential: exams, documented experience, financial responsibility, insurance, and continuing obligations, issued and disciplined by the state's licensing board. It attaches to regulated categories of work, and electrical work is the category that matters most in solar.
Two things a license is not. It is not a course certificate. No class, no online program, and no guide on this site confers a license or a certification of any kind, and we claim none. And it is not transferable know-how. An unlicensed person doing licensed work is unlicensed work, no matter how skilled the person or who taught them.
The two piles of work
Every install splits into the same two piles, and it is worth committing to memory because we get asked about it weekly. Our DIY vs pro install guide walks it in full.
The first pile is mechanical: assembling a ground mount, setting panels on rails, routing PV wire along the planned path, hanging an inverter on a wall, placing batteries. Construction work. Most of the project's hours live here, and a handy homeowner can legitimately do it.
The second pile is licensed electrical work: anything inside the main service panel, the connection between the system and the home's service, and whatever else local code assigns to a licensed electrician. Smaller in hours, bigger in consequences, and not a place for guesswork by anyone.
Permits and interconnection ride on top of both piles no matter who swings the wrench. The permit attaches to the work, whoever performs it, and a grid-connected system needs an interconnection agreement with the utility before it back-feeds anything.
The homeowner (owner-builder) exemption
Florida law includes an owner-builder exemption. In some circumstances a homeowner may pull their own permit and perform work on their own residence that would otherwise require a licensed contractor, with the work inspected the same as a pro's.
It comes with real limits, and this is where careless summaries get people in trouble. The exemption is personal and narrow. It applies to the owner's own property. It does not let the owner hire unlicensed workers to do the licensed work. It carries conditions about occupying rather than selling the home, and the owner takes on the responsibilities and the liability a contractor would otherwise carry. Counties administer it, and some are stricter than others about what an owner may take on.
Do not treat this section as the law. Verify the current Florida statute text and your county building department's rules before relying on the exemption, because the details are set by statute, they can change, and the county's word is the operative one at the permit desk. One phone call to the building department, made before the equipment order, settles what you may do at your address. Their word beats anything on the internet, this guide included.
The honest summary: the exemption is real, some of our kit customers use it, and the most common path is still the split above. The owner does the mechanical pile, and a licensed electrician does the electrical pile and the permit-facing work.
Why this comes before the tools do
When a guide walks through wiring, it is teaching how the work is done, never granting permission to do it in your jurisdiction. Who may legally perform each task at a given address is the AHJ's call, resolved before the ladder comes off the truck. Teaching the knowledge and respecting the license line at the same time is the whole posture of this series, and of the company.

Before any equipment order, call your county building department and ask three questions: does my county honor the owner-builder exemption for this kind of work, what may I do myself at my address, and what must a licensed contractor pull and perform?
