Victron just dropped Microgrid mode. Here is who actually needs it

Victron quietly dropped a feature in April that turns a stack of off-grid inverters into a single coordinated grid. They call it Microgrid. Multiple MultiPlus or Quattro setups, even ones that are different sizes, share an AC bus and split the load automatically. Scale ceiling: 400 kW.

400 kW is a small village.

Most of us are not running villages.

Here is what Victron actually shipped. Before April, if you wanted two separate Victron inverter stacks (a 15 kW stack on the main house and a 10 kW stack on the workshop), the two had to be wired as one parallel system with matched units, or they lived on their own islands and you moved loads between them manually. Microgrid lets each stack stay independent. They sync on a shared AC bus. When the main house is full and the workshop has spare capacity, the workshop helps. When the workshop fires up a welder, the house contributes.

In practical terms, you can add capacity in chunks. A homestead can start with one 6.4 kW stack on the main house, run that for a year, then add a 5 kW stack at the barn when the freezer count doubles. Both share. Neither gets rebuilt.

The other quiet update is more useful for most of us. Victron's new 4500W and 6500W units are rated in real watts. The old units were rated in volt-amps, which meant doing math to get to actual output. The new sticker is the number you can use directly.

Who actually needs Microgrid

  • A growing homestead. Two outbuildings, a workshop, a guest cabin. You add load every year and you do not want to forklift the old inverter every time you grow.
  • A small farm with seasonal load. Hay barn fan in summer, heater in winter, never both at once. Microgrid lets you share the storage instead of buying double.
  • A neighborhood resilience build. Three or four houses on a private microgrid sharing one bank. Rare, real, and slowly growing in the panhandle.

Who does not need Microgrid

  • Most single-house residential builds. One inverter, one battery bank, one panel array. A FlexBOSS21 or a 5 kW MultiPlus covers it.
  • Anybody who just wants whole-home backup for an outage. A single stack with the loads on a critical panel is simpler and cheaper.
  • Anybody who has not built the first system yet. Microgrid is a step you take after the first build works. Start small.

Here is the homestead scenario we sketch on napkins all the time. A place outside Milton with a main house, a 1,200 square foot workshop, and a pole barn that holds a freezer and a fridge for game. The main house runs on a 6 kW solar system with 14 kWh of battery. The workshop has its own 3 kW system that gets used twice a month for the table saw. The pole barn runs on a generator when the freezer needs it.

Before Microgrid, sharing that storage meant rebuilding the whole thing as one big parallel system. A pile of new gear, three days of wiring, and a new battery cabinet. With Microgrid, the workshop stack stays where it is. The main house stack stays where it is. The pole barn gets a small Victron stack and ties in to the shared bus. The freezer stops calling the generator every cold front.

That is the use case. Microgrid is the answer when you are about to build the second thing and you want it to talk to the first thing.

Three questions before you buy the second inverter

  1. Do I have more than one building that wants to share storage? If no, you do not need Microgrid yet.
  2. Are my existing units Victron MultiPlus or Quattro on the current firmware? Microgrid does not retrofit older boxes without a firmware update, and some older models will not take the update at all.
  3. Am I picking the new watt-rated 4500W or 6500W units, or the older VA-rated units? Pick the new ones if the wattage you need lines up. Less math, fewer surprises.

For most homesteads in the panhandle, the answer to question one is "not yet." That is the right answer. Microgrid is a real upgrade for the people who actually need it. For everybody else, it is overkill, and a second stack you cannot fill is just expensive copper sitting on a wall.
