A guy called us from Navarre last spring, ready to buy. He had picked his panels, he had a number in his head, he just wanted us to say go. The first thing we asked was which way his roof faced. He did not know. So we pulled up his address on a map, and there it was. The big clean roof plane he was picturing pointed almost due north. The only south-facing slope was a small dormer, and a live oak kept it in shade until two in the afternoon. He was about to spend real money before anyone looked at the one thing that decides whether solar works at all.
That thing is your roof. You can check it yourself in about thirty seconds, standing in your own yard, before you take a single sales call. Four things to look at. Here they are.
Which way it faces
In our half of the world, south is the winner. A roof plane that faces south soaks up the most sun from morning to evening, because the sun tracks across the southern sky all day. On the Gulf Coast that is where you want your panels if you can get them there.
East and west both work fine. They just give up a little. An east or west roof usually makes somewhere around 15% to 20% less over a year than the same panels facing south. That is often still worth doing, especially if a west-facing roof lines up with when you actually use power in the afternoon and evening.
North is the weak one. A north-facing plane gets the least sun of the four, and in most cases you would rather put the array somewhere else, even on a ground mount in the yard.
You do not need a survey to figure this out. The compass app on your phone will tell you which way you are looking while you stand at the edge of the roof line. Or type your address into a map, switch to satellite view, and read the roof from above.
How much shade lands on it
Shade is the quiet killer. A roof can face perfect south and still be a bad site if a tree or a chimney throws a shadow across it for half the day.
Here is why a little shade costs a lot. Panels wire together in strings, and in a basic string one shaded panel can drag down the ones tied to it. A single branch shadow at ten in the morning can cost you more production than the size of the shadow suggests. Panel-level electronics soften that, but the honest answer is that shade always costs something.
Walk out and look at your roof three times in one day: mid-morning, noon, and mid-afternoon. Note where the shadows fall each time. Watch for the usual suspects. A tall oak to the south. The neighbor's two-story roofline. A chimney, a plumbing vent, a satellite dish. And remember the sun sits lower in winter, so a spot that is clear in July can pick up shade in December.
How steep it is
Pitch is how steep the roof is. Most houses in the panhandle run somewhere between a 4:12 and a 6:12, which is a gentle to medium slope. That range is close to ideal for solar, so most roofs here are fine as is.
A flatter roof still works. The panels get set on tilt legs so they catch the sun at a better angle. A very steep roof works too, but it is harder and slower to work on, and that can add to the install cost. None of this rules a house out. It just changes the plan, and it is worth knowing before you get a quote so nothing on the price surprises you.
How old it is
This is the one people forget, and it is the expensive one to get wrong. Panels last 25 years or more. A common asphalt shingle roof lasts around 20 to 25. If your shingles are near the end of that, you want a new roof under the panels before they go up.
The reason is simple math. If you put an array on a roof with three years left in it, a licensed crew has to pull every panel off, reroof, and set them all back. That is a bill you could have skipped by reroofing first. So check the age. If the roof is getting tired, handle the roof, then the solar. If you have a metal roof, you are in good shape. Metal often lasts 40 to 50 years, longer than the panels, and it is one of the easiest surfaces to mount on.
The 30-second version
Stand across the street from your house and run the checklist. Pull up the compass or the satellite view and find your south-facing planes. Look for anything that throws shade and picture it at three different times of day. Eyeball the pitch. Do the honest math on how old the roof is.
If you have a south or west plane, mostly clear of shade, on a roof with years left in it, you are a strong candidate and the rest is just picking gear. If your only open roof faces north or sits under a big tree, you still have moves. Look at a ground mount in the yard or a different roof plane before you spend anything.
